And Then, We Learn Nothing

  • ATDW_Large_Landscape__9102450_TTAS_And_Then_We_Learn_Nothing

It’s complicated. It’s not black-and-white.
7 January 2015: Two men, armed with assault rifles, kill 12 people – including 5 cartoonists – and injure 11 more at the offices of the French satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo. The gunmen identify themselves as members of Al-Qaeda in Yemen.
4 days later: In Paris, 2 million people, including over 40 world leaders, rally for peace and freedom-of-expression. The phrase Je Suis Charlie echoes around the world.
During the next 10 days: 60 French citizens are arrested for things they have said or written, publicly or on social media. One is a 16-year-old schoolboy charged with “defending terrorism” in a cartoon posted on Facebook. France also declares pro-Palestinian demonstrations “a threat to public order,” and becomes the first country in the world to ban them.
And Then, We Learnt Nothing is Blue Cow’s investigation into the events before and after the Charlie Hebdo shootings.
